Understanding the numbers in the Benchmark Performance report, why the calculations were chosen, and how to use the report with clients

This report details the benchmarks that have been assigned to an account. This table allows you to quickly see the performance of a given benchmark or blended benchmark in relation to the performance of a client's account.

What is included in the number you are looking at? (calculations, source, etc.)

This report includes any benchmarks assigned and the various performance intervals. The inception to date (ITD) column is based off the inception date of the account or household.   

Why have we chosen to include and/or calculate the number the way we do?

How can this report be used in a client review to help boost your clients' confidence, increase transparency, and answer questions?

This report is particularly useful to address clients investment strategies in relation to broader market performance. Consider the following tips and best practices to leverage this report in your client reviews:

  • Prompts a discussion on how the markets are doing and what changes can be seen over a given time period 

  • Framing a client's portfolio in relation to the market. Highlighting the importance of diversification. 

  • For advisory firms who are seeking to meet or beat a benchmark, this is a way to consistently track the performance.
